For those not familiar with the situation - the community where we live, Seven Oaks in Odenton, Maryland, wants to construct a dog park for community residents and their dogs.

CoolThingsForDogs.com is proud to support the community in its efforts to see this project to fruition.

As such, this page is dedicated to tracking the progress of this endeavor for residents of Seven Oaks and their supporters, and to serve as a foundation for other communities who may decide to provide similar amenities for their community in the future.

First, A Few Points ...

According to national statistics, there are currently more than 74.8 Million dog owners in the U.S., spanning all socio-economic backgrounds.

In keeping with those statistics, approximately 40% of all U.S. homes own at least one dog.

With about 3,200 homes in Seven Oaks, those statistics tell us that about 1,250 homes in our community have a dog with no place run free.

Since 2001, Anne Arundel County has constructed 5 dog parks in response to an increase of dogs in their parks, and to dog owners' requests to have an area to let their pets run "off-leash" in an open area. The nearest of these 5 to Seven Oaks is a 20-minute drive away.

Since 2001, the county has had less than 10 negative incidents reported at these dog parks, with none of those resulting in legal filings against the county.

Pet spending in America has gone from $17 Billion in 1994 to more than $42 Billion dollars today. That number is 60% larger than the childrens toy industry!

Even non-dog lovers must recognize the economic and social impact dogs have on our communities.

As the Seven Oaks Community grows in the coming years, the number of dogs in the community will grow as well. So too will the need for planned recreational facilities for these family members, much in the same way we provide tot-lots for the kids and gyms and swimming pools for everyone who uses those amenities.

Access to a local community off-leash area (OLA) is the safest, most effective way for dog owners to exercise and socialize their pets. In addition, dog parks provide a setting that encourages community involvement and builds social relationships among its users. This, in turn, provides a more secure environment for the entire community.
